GROWTH OF CARBON NANOTUBES ON THE SURFACE OF CARBON FIBERS BY MICROWAVE PLASMA CHEMICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION

  • In this paper, carbon nanotubes were synthesized on the surface of carbon fibers by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition methods. The effects of the microwave power, reaction time, adsorption time and adsorption concentration of catalyst precursor on carbon nanotubes growth were systematically investigated.Surface morphology of the sample was detected by SEM.The results showed that microwave power, reaction time has a great influence on the morphology of carbon nanotubes. With the prolong of adsorption time, the growth rate of carbon nanotubes increase and their yield improve; however,a large amount of amorphous carbon and graphite produce on the surface of carbon nanotubes as a result of excessive adsorption concentration of catalyst precursor, which makes the quality of carbon nanotubes lower seriously.
