Progress in In-situ Resource Utilization of Atmospheric on Mars

  • The technology of in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) on Mars is necessary for the future long-term missions such as Mars sampling return and manned Mars exploration. The extraction and the storage of available resources on Mars will guarantee the needs of the manned Mars mission and even Mars colonization. In this paper, based on the concept of Mars in-situ resource utilization, the available resources of Mars atmosphere is analyzed and the developments of related technologies at home and abroad from two aspects (H2O and CO2) are interpreted. Finally, the methods of obtaining the required methane and oxygen for astronaut activity on the Mars and return to the earth are given.
