SURFACE COMPOSITES: A NOVEL ENGINEERING MATERIAL

  • A new engineering material named “surface composites”is introduced. The key charactercistic of the surface composites is the formation of a three dimensional (3D) composition and thermal gradient interface between the film and the substrate material. The compressive stresses near the interface are gradient over a certain thickness of the film. Additionally, the interface area can be one order of magnitude higher than that of the orginal surface. Thus, the creation of a three dimensional interface is expected to increase the adherence strength of the film to the base substantially. The mechanisms, fabrication methods and examples are introduced.
